Visions and Goals

Purpose of Blueprint

Through this document we explain our visions, goals to manifest those visions, and leave room for the corresponding concrete action to achieve those goals for ourselves and humanity.  We hope other regional people’s assemblies can create their own blueprints, centered on the future they envision, and structured around the most effective actions to achieve these visions.

Vision Blueprint - note (this is a work in progress that excludes certain details such as goals and actions, so you can focus on the basic visions we have amassed thus far)

  1. Effectively connect our occupation with the Global Movement – by
    1. Facilitating the growth of local movements for direct, organic, participatory consensus-based democracy
    2. Studying ourselves and other local occupations to find more ideal models of consensus building, decision making and coordination through transparent, iterative design
    3. Finding points of harmony of visions/goals/actions across local and regional people’s assemblies for deeper impact.
    4. Creating the emotional and actual physical spaces for this process for the organic discussion of the future to unfold
    5. Encouraging each occupation to focus on their local economic, cultural and political assets as a specialization of the movement (our specialization is the following) – as we

  6. Re-appropriate our media culture, putting truth and dialogue over advertising and sensationalism
  7. Define and defend humanity’s inalienable liberties from the bottom up

  10. Facilitate the peaceful harmony of humanity’s religious, spiritual and existential traditions

Dialogue and Collection Process

Spend 5 minutes discussion to invent an ideal forums for input on the Visions and Goals Blueprint.  This presentation at the GA is one (with Facilitation).  Another is to create an online forum with a reddit-like set up (with the Open Source Working Group).  Another is to speak directly to the Occupiers themselves that are often too busy running day to day kitchen, medical, security, and sanitation duties to have their voices heard in the very movement they are building (with the Think Tank working group).

 

FLO means Free Libre Open-Source, as one term that describes the non-proprietary practice for developing various technologies and methods as broad as computer operating systems to tractor design.

Hello World!
Hello world! – We of Liberty Plaza would like to thank the global population for the amazing outpouring of support and inspiration. Our original demand has been already met beyond our greatest hopes. We occupied Wall Street with the intent of bringing attention to an economic system that is detached from real human needs. In less than one month global solidarity and a global dialog has emerged – never in the history of the world have all of the worlds citizations and cultures come together in an unidealogial movement like this.
We present the following living vision of our movement. It is one document among many that work together in focusing our occupation for the public and ourselves. The vision has ten focii with practical goals for New York City. Our goals are aimed to effectively dissolve the shadow government of corporations and banks, literally surrounding Liberty Plaza, that are destroying the American dream, and our planet Earth. We will not fight the shadow government. We will invent new ways of living – that will overcome our constructed dependence upon the shadow government. We will invent the new economy, culture, and technology fitting of the Information Age. We will make New York City a metropolis built for the future.
A few things must be said. Corporations do not make jobs – people make jobs. Money does not support livelihood – our Earth supports livelihood. The proprietary technology used to hijack and manipulate the human spirit into thinking otherwise no longer belongs to the shadow government – the technology belongs to us. Thus the following ten visions are more than feasible. Only one question remains: When will each goal be achieved? The answer to that depends depends on YOU.

Amendment Process
We will create a reddit-based forum online to elicit ideas for amendments and to vote on those ideas for adoption.  In order to propose an amendment, a forum user must first vote on at least one popular and two random ideas from the forum. Users may post and vote with a public identity, masked identity, or anonymously.  A small fraction of the most popular posts, based on votes, will be presented to the General Assembly, where they will be officially considered as amendments or edits to the current version.
Archiving Process
The Blueprint will live in two online version.  The first is the Official Non-Editable Wiki, which will have previous versions archived for the public.  The second is an Unofficial Sandbox Wiki for the public to freely engage, edit, and experiment with.  We predict that the Unofficial Sandbox version will yield very interesting and possibly sourced for amendments.

    The Scope of Human Obligations

  2. On Wednesday (10/26), I wrote up a quick draft of a preamble for our document. Since then, I started a Forum topic and posted an edited version there. Since so many other useful posts are here, I’m adding a copy of my latest draft. I tried to incorporate the substance of some of the comments I heard on Wednesday – the first line was inspired by one of them. I haven’t tried to globalize it yet – it will take me some time to look at the declarations posted here.

    Preamble to Draft Statement of Visions and Goals

    Our political and economic institutions are broken.

    Our Declaration of Independence tells us that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights; and that in order to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. But our government doesn’t work that way today.

    Ever since Europeans arrived on this continent, we have tolerated the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. Today, we have an economy dominated by large corporations, with a disproportionate share of the stock owned by those whose income is in the top 1 percent. A great thinker, John Rawls, wrote that unequal distribution of wealth can be justified – but only if it benefits everyone, particularly those who have the least. Our economy doesn’t work that way today.

    Elizabeth Warren very eloquently reminded our economic elites that they did not earn their fortunes by themselves. Their prosperity is only possible because the rest of us did our share – and continue to do our share – under the unwritten social contract that ties us together as a society. She reminded them that they, too, have obligations under that social contract.

    It is time to reclaim our inalienable rights as citizens. It is time to build the free and democratic society that our founders envisioned. It is time to remind the 1 percent who control so much of this nation’s wealth that their prosperity is made possible by our efforts. It is time to make our government and our economic institutions work for everyone, not just for those on top.

  3. One should not forget the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen” (1789), and the analogous “Declaration of the Rights of Woman” (1791) from France. Also, I can look into early drafts of the Soviet constitution.

    Group forms facilitation team (two facilitators, one stack taker, one minute taker, one timekeeper)
    Process review (hand signals, progressive stack)
    Remind of time limit of meeting (90 minutes)
    Go around circle and give names, pass email list around
    Moment of silence
    ¯ Addresses from newcomers (why have you come, what is on your heart to share?) – with progressive stack, for as many as can speak in 15 minutes, any left on stack carry over to the next day

    3. Body of Meeting

    ○ Agenda – List all items, then start with 1st.

    4. Conclusion of Meeting

    Summary/evaluation: discuss progress from the meeting, in order to decide on next day’s agenda
    ○ Set agenda for next day and order of each item
    ○ Moment of silence & closing.

I still find it problematic that the Blueprint (in this version or any of its later manifestations) would be listed and featured so prominently as “the” document, to the exclusion of other texts which have been submitted. Indeed, there has been a plenitude of new material introduced to the group (Bill’s proposal, Frank’s, Michael’s, Rich’s, Darrell’s, mine).

    Some of these proposed texts (Frank’s, Michael’s, Rich’s) have been distillations or refinements of the original mass of content contained in the Blueprint, while others (Bill’s, Darrell’s, mine) have not. As Zocera has pointed out, and certain others seem to agree, there is no central document to speak of. There has only been a sort of tacitly assumed (but never formally recognized) consensus that the Blueprint is this document, and that all other documents will inevitably be subordinated and subsumed unto it.

    I have never been quite satisfied with this document, either in terms of its approach or any of its various iterations. But that is neither here nor there. I don’t mind at all continuing to edit the newly-refined versions of the Blueprint, or if pieces of the document I or others have put forward are extracted and incorporated into whatever the Blueprint eventually becomes. I just object to the idea that there is any decided-upon single touchstone text or collected amalgam of ideas that we are working from. Other documents should be considered also as standalone pieces to be edited on a case by case basis.

    Though I tend to reject the sort of conspiracy theories that are popular within some parts of the OWS phenomenon, I have some concerns about the problematic prehistory of the original Vision & Goals group in its feud with the Demands working group and the subsequent composition of the Blueprint by a few individuals or even a single individual (despite claims that it was somehow “contributed to” by over 200 people). I also have some concerns relating solely to the content that was originally gathered. I frame these somewhat polemically, but I prefer not to pull punches.

  6. To confront and overthrow, the multi-national corporate domination of the People, Economy, Resources and Formal Government, we need a multi-national political organization. I suggest some uniform principals that appeal to Universal agreement, support and acceptance.

    PEOPLE’S EARTH PARTY

    The People’s Earth Party is dedicated to insure that humanity on Earth survives the millennium, not just a century. To achieve this goal, the following principals shall constitute the Cornerstones of P.E.P. policy.

    The Cornerstone Policies and Principals of the People’s Earth Party:

    *Disarmament:
    non-violent resolution of issues
    Removal of all nuclear weapons and nuclear weapon technology
    End all use of land and anti-personnel mines and explosives
    *[The cost of 1 nuclear could feed at least 100,000 people for 1 year]

    Actions to advance The Peoples Earth Party must adhere to these principals in order to receive the recognition of P.E.P.
    These are principal to gather the broadest support and difficult to attack or disagree with.
    The rights of the rich must also be protected and they should not be vilified. They should be encouraged and recognized for acting responsibly with their money, donation to charities, supporting public causes that benefit the 99%.
